Just received this for my daughter to use this Summer :

http://www.hms-beagle.com/RHAChemSets.html

...fond rememberances of my own chemistry set as a younger-tinkerer....

remember: if it stinks it is chemistry. if it doesn't work it is physics.

TaL from the name I'm guessing this is a British product marketed in the UK and not to us USians, because the liability and stupid TERRORIST WITH A FLASK issues have made it impossible to sell a chemistry set here with anything more reactive in it than baking soda and vinegar, and if you put the two in the same flask the FBI shows up.

I'm so old that I had a real Chemistry set like that when I was a kid, where making little explosions was half the experiments.

"H.M.S. Beagle is located in historic downtown Parkville, Missouri at 180 English Landing Drive."

    From the web site:

    http://www.hms-beagle.com/

    Sounds like a fantastic place.

Takes me back to the days back in Blighty when my local toy store had a shelves of beakers, flasks, tubes, bunsen burners. The whole works we could add to our chemistry labs that started with a chemistry set. Right there next to the Action men and Airfix kits etc.

Strange, I remember these kits also but am not "that old"!!! I remember making what could only be summed up as "Exploding blue ink"!!! Mom was not happy and I seem to remember the kit disappearing soon after that one!

we are setting up the chem lab outside on a craftsman workbench, because if we are "successful" there may be occassional outbursts of colored smoke, sparks, fizzy messes and obnoxious odors.

Odd, but even back in my day we couldn't get our high school to sponsor "Crater Club."
"But how we ever gonna beat the Russkies to the moon," I protested, "if we can't even test out our hypergolic goliaths after school?"

one or two planned craters may be fun, but I do hope there will not be any spontaneous crater formations as a primary or secondary effect of our explorations. LOL

    TinkersALot,

Don't forget to introduce your daughter to the "Periodic table of Videos". A lot of entertainig chemistry demonstrations in there and Professor Poliakov is wonderful.
