Okay, so it doesn't exist just yet. But NASA is hoping to usher in a food revolution by giving mechanical engineer Anjan Contractor a $125,000 grant to make his plans for 3D-printed dinners a reality.

We used to build a control board for a pizza sauce dispenser. The pizza dough was placed on a turntable and it would spin. An arm with a sauce tube/nozzle would run from the center out dispensing a spiral run of sauce at a very precise amount. The idea of "printing" food leaves a bad taste in my mouth. There is a reason why things hand made from scratch taste better than powder and water in the microwave.....It would be interesting to see the progression of experiments on a food printer though. Where's Mikey when you need him...........

I'm just a little disappointed actually. I gave up on getting my hands on a hoverboard, but I thought at least we had a chance at this..

Hmmm... And I thought that NASA was funding a covert program to test food for space travel in 7-11 outlets. If we have large portions of the world population that can survive solely on what 7-11 delivers, we will be ready for a mass migration to Mars.

3-D printed pizza might be part of that. A first phase would be to convert the moon to mozzarella. Then we need to develop the means to convert asteroid resources into a stable wheat starch and gluten analog. Moisture will obviously come from recycled water.

    Mozzarella?

Only if you can't legally get hold of the bacteria used in the process of making Jarlsberg cheese.
Remember, food is important for morale, so on long trips, getting the best ingredients matters.

    Already arguing about the menu!

I suspect that NASA really just wants a free lunch and this is never going to get off the ground.
