one led - one digit - or one smiliey?

It probably exists already - if not it should: A set of tiny LED's that are not simply boring round, but where the face is a number 0-9, I mean, where the plastic is shaped like a number. Come to think about it, there should be smiley-LEDs too.
Hard to google - does anyone know?

I've seen triangles, rectangles, ovals, etc. LED's but never numbers or letters. However here's a way to DIY:

I read embedding a LED in Polymorph works well.

A LED in Polymorph probably wouldn't look as nice as an acrylic version but it would be a lot easier to make.

If haven't used Polymorph yet, get some. It's great stuff.

I've wondered how LEDs embedded in my hexacopter landing gear would look.

Sounds like a project for a 3D printer. You start with a conventional LED and add a pattern over it to display what you want.

Print the characters on a transparent sheet, cut them out, sand an appropriate led so the end is flat, glue the led over the character using clear silicone sealant, trim off excess transparent sheet, and you have what you want. Works better on larger leds.

So, character-LEDs are actually one of the few things that does not yet exist? Hmmm- I dread to think that after ending up with fingers full of glue, ruined scissors, half-decent looking result, hours spent etc. - I find they already exist from eg. funled.com-
