Tiny Device Will Detect Domestic Drones

"A Washington, D.C.-based engineer is working on the "Drone Shield," a small, Wi-Fi-connected device that uses a microphone to detect a drone's "acoustic signatures" (sound frequency and spectrum) when it's within range."

Using IndieGoGo to finance the project.

"The device will cost $69 and will be about the size of a USB thumb drive. It will use Raspberry Pi – a tiny, $25 computer – and commercially available microphones to detect drones."

    Perfect.

Just what me and the kids need to drive the paranoid conspiracy theorists crazy at night. Time to drive around the suburbs and drop off our remotely operated ASE's (acoustic signature emitters) then watch the crazies run outside in their underwear, waving their guns at the sky.

LOL. All you need now is a Labradrone Retriever :)

Wow, I would put that in the "someone is really buying that?" category. The effort to create a database of all the acoustic signatures of available "drone's" is mind boggling. Good marketing going after the paranoia factor though. It's funded projects like this that encourage me to launch some of my "realistic" ideas onto kickstarter, tindie, or IndieGoGo.

It would be fairly easy to differentiate small drones from a Cessna. All one needs is an array of audio spectrum analyzers. The US Navy has been doing Submarine cavitation analysis for at least 40 years - under water is better because it's a thicker medium. The hard part is detecting anything in time to get out the old trusty Skeet gun. Maybe we can get drone permits for rural areas.

....this where the Estes Patriot 6 Pack comes into play.....complete with RasPi interface!

    Kick starter, anyone??

"...Drone owners will be asked to record the sound of their drones to be included in the database..."

I can only imagine the sheer quantity of belching and farting sounds this guy is going to have to wade through in this process.

I wonder if it can detect those new anti-gravity humanoid drones now being developed in Appalachia...

You need the sound library from post #9 to detect those guys!

If you file notches in your drone propellers, I suspect you will alter the sound signature. Maybe this is a task for your personal drone radar.

Even better than my plan to drop off electronically operated ASE's (acoustic signature emitters)... I've succeeded in genetically modifying some flies to sound precisely like the ELEV-8.

First the media always seems to blow stuff like that out of proportion, and second how would you get it out of the air?

It's easy. That's where my new high-voltage DroneNet technology comes into play. Simply wrap your house in it, plug it in, and sleep secure.

My other on-going project is to genetically modify some killer bees that will swarm the offending drone and convert it into wax. I've already perfected it for my clarinet-playing neighbor who was converted into a crate of scented candles.
