Compact 1602 LCD modules exist?

While all these 1602 and their relative displays seem to use same design, it is not very comfortable to use in handheld projects. First, the PCB size is way too large, display bezel too big, display unused space also quite large. On the other hand, there are 1602 COG modules, which does not have this limitation, but they require additional hardware to work properly or either have i2c or whatever interface (not compatible with standard HD4480 or what is used in these 1602). So, maybe anyone seen a compact 1602 module, which is pin to pin compatible with standard 1602 ones?

Something like these? 1.8" x 0.8" with flat ribbon connector at 1mm spacing.

All the displays I've gotten from Newhaven are good quality. On the other hand, every cheap generic display I've bought (can you say eBay) seem to be second rate QC rejects that suffer from very slow pixel updating, uneven back-lighting that tends to lose brightness quickly over time, and horrible ghosting effects. I have some Optrex displays and they are excellent also.

And also these inverted (white on blue, for example), displays that are so trendy now, perform very poorly under direct sunlight.
