Switching Power Supplies and Various Prop Boards

Hi guys,

Long time lurker... occasional poster here. I am fairly facile with the Propeller... basic electronics, not so much.

I have various long term projects...including a semi-autonomous wheelchair. The motors are 24V 15Amp. I have read that it is a good design practice to drive everything from a common source...i.e. the main batteries.

So, I have in my hands what I believe is a switching step down converter. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-PC-OF-A-DC-STEP-DOWN-CONVERTER-MODULE-WITH-MULTI-FUNCTION-VOLT-METER-NICE-/261184848885?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ccfd483f5

I would like to feed 5V from this into a Quickstart board so that I can have 5V available at Vin. From other questions, it seems that this might not be healthy for the linear regulator of the QuickStart Board. True?

Alternatively, could I do the same thing to a Propeller Project Board?

Thanks,

Rich

    Rich,

I feed linear regulators with the output of buck converters all the time. In fact, ever since the advent of this guy, I do little else. Back in the day, a linear regulator would provide something like 30 or 40 dB of isolation from switching noise on Vin. I don't know what the LD1117v33 offers in this regard, but the combo certainly does work well.

Thanks... usually, I just go ahead and do it. In this case, I don't want my contraption to go at full speed backwards, which is what will happen if my my prop doesn't feed it a constant 2.5 volts to keep it still. So, frying my board wouldn't be good. I"m thinking of three levels of kill switches. Please take a gander, when I post the design:)
