There are 2 types of RFID systems, Active and Passive. Parallax sells the passive type which uses non-powered tags and have a range of a couple of inches. Active uses powered transmissions from the tags and can be tracked using a variety of ways including satellite. Active RFID is of course more expensive than passive.
