New Quickstart PE Shield

I'm not sure if I'm on insanity or genius with this, but after seeing another new Propeller user struggling with a breadboard circuit this last week, I think I'm somewhere in between.

I just received these.. I'm calling them the Quickstart PE Shield.

The final product will be sold with a reset switch, two 20pin female headers and one 40pin male header. The "silkscreened" socket diagram isn't for the addition of a second Propeller, but is to provide a new user an easy way to access the Propeller's pins without having to deal with the funky 40pin header that the Quickstart provides. I'm hoping that by combing one of these with a Quickstart and mounting hardware a new user will be able to use the PE Kit materials (included in the Propeller Tool) to create success and get them hooked on our favorite chip.

I'm still waiting for my 20pin headers to arrive, so it'll be a couple more days until these are available.

You need a subscription service...just keep sending new boards to me!!

If I buy a couple, you CAN'T STOP me from using it to add a second (or third) Propeller!!!

I also like it for it's original intent!!

In stock now at a PropellerPowered near me??? :0)

EDIT: Will a 40 pin DIP socket fit in them holes??

    heh..

The 40pin dip will fit the holes, but you'll need to bend a three pins out to make connection with the crystal. I routed the /RTS and /CTS and an extra 5v to those positions.

After I excitedly wrote my first response, calmer heads prevailed and realized the pins from the QS 40 pin header are routed to the 40 pin socket area - pin for pin except for the three you swapped. DOH, that won't work for hosting a second Prop!

But......to be continued in a more private discussion.

I think you might want to rethink that, it may lead to confusion since everything else is just like the Prop DIP and it even has the chip shaped outline.

I would just leave those spots empty.

The for intended audience, it is not expected to be a problem. And if someone wants to hack it into something else, I'm not going to stop that.

I am going to attach a warning to the kit package that this is NOT intended as a socket for an actual Propeller chip.
