Looking at a Cable to connect boards like the HIB etc to the quickstart to allow flexibility of mounting inside enclosures, I've seen this IDE cable

and wondered if it would be suitable?

I've got a good selection of cables and connectors, and make up my own cables using a cheap tool.

I looked at some IDC connectors at the local maplin store but they only had one female one, as the IDE cables are so abundant I wondered if they'd do the job and if anyone had tried using IDE cables before?

I've used 80-pin cables and IDC connectors before. You can get the cable by the foot from some suppliers, and crimp either male of female connectors, as needed. You can also use an off-the-shelf IDE cable, as long as it does not support cable select. (Cables that support Cable Select are missing a connection on the slave connector.) You would also need to use headers to couple the QuickStart to the socket on the cable. I've done this with the same headers that come with several of our breadboard-based kits to connect servos into a breadboard.

Either way, make sure that you get the orientation correct, or else you'll end up swapping pins around.
