Hi all im new to the forum and this is my first post. Im not a roboteer and im not even very familiar with electronics but i need advice for something ive been meaning to invent and have put together by some folks in china.

Im trying to make a prototype for a laser that is mounted on a motorized swivel that triggers when a infrared target is acquired and then shoots the beam at it..Also powered by solar. Now I know the lasers u buy in china are cheep as hell and so are the infrared cameras, but the trick would be in the mechanics of the swivel system and how far the infrared camera can see..and well i guess toughest of all putting it all together so it works :p ..Im not talking a powerful laser just enough to make a beam at night..can anyone shed some light on how i can present this to be made?

Red and green laser diodes are cheap on Ebay, I got a 3.3v red for $4.

Micro servos can easily move these, the 7gram srvos are like $2 now. These are easy to control from the prop.

Infrared sensors can also be had cheap, IR LED will work as a sensor.

Solar is also pretty easy, I think th DS13920 something is a realtime clock and battery charger, so solar + LiPo would be possible.

Don't know what you intend by "aquire tartget". This is a little nebulous, you might want to nail this down a little better of tell us what you've got or have in mind. But the rest seems doable.

As far as "have put together by folks in china", maybe see if you can get something worthy of Hack-a-day for starters.

Thinking of shooting mosquitos? These folks here in Bellevue have been working on that.

I had wondered recently about doing that - how much energy do you need to render a Mozzie 'inoperable', and can you still meet the eye-safe specs.
It does not need to be so high, as to burn off the wings - a lobotomy would do ?

    ... a infrared target is acquired ...

If you're talking about detecting a person or medium-sized warm-blooded animal, then a passive infrared (PIR) device might be what you're looking for. They pick up people from about 30 feet away and smaller animals at closer range.

Target acquisition could be achieved along the lines of this project or this IR Compound Eye project by Oddbot at Lets Make Robots.

The second project is discussed here on the Parallax forums.

And from there it is relatively easy to get the laser to track with the 'eye'.

    Best of luck

Is that that "Laser Fly Surgery" they keep mentioning?

The article I read a while back said they don't out right incinerate them. The laser delivers a lethal amount of energy, but the skeeters have time to fly off someplace and die. I don't recall any mention of being eye safe, only that is was bug unsafe.
