Pilot Reports 'Drone' Sighting at JFK

http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/pilot-reports-drone-sighting-jfk-121603290--abc-news-topstories.html

The Federal Aviation Administration is looking into a report by an Alitalia pilot who said he saw a "small, unmanned or remote-controlled aircraft" on final approach to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The Alitalia plane was on final approach about 1:15 p.m. Monday, when the pilot saw the unmanned aircraft approximately four to five miles southeast of the airport, the FAA said in a statement.

"We saw a drone, a drone aircraft," the pilot can be heard telling the control tower on radio calls captured by the website LiveATC.net. Later in the recording another pilot reports a similar sighting.

The FAA is investigating the pilot's claim and the FBI is taking a preliminary look into this incident. The Joint Terror Task Force is also investigating, a source familiar with the investigation told ABC News.

The unmanned aircraft was flying at an altitude of approximately 1,500 feet, but the pilot did not take evasive action and the Alitalia flight landed safely, according to the FAA.

Maybe they'll start reporting on UFO sightings now.

Would you be able to see an ELEV8 (ugh) from 5 miles away ?

I think the plane and the drone were near each other - while they were both 5 miles from the airport

Our local flying club is located near our airport. Whenever one of us use the field we call the tower to let them know. Apparently the keep an eye on the model aircraft and warn any approaching planes if there looks like there could be a problem. Our local airfield is not a busy one.

I used to (over 20 years ago) use radio controlled airplanes to aerial photographs of archaeological sites, farms and other properties. I used a airplane with a 99" wing span. I could just barely see the airplane when it was 1/4 a mile away. I'd think anything that could be seen 5 miles away would be large enough to be a maned aircraft.

    Edit: I hadn't seen Ron's last reply.

I suppose the sentence could be parsed that way. Not very precise writing though.

Where did the Elev-8 get mentioned? All I saw was something about a "drone". I didn't even see that it was a copter type even, just "unmanned aircraft".

The local RC airstrip is located at the county landfill.

They don't have a windsock, they just look at which direction the methane flare is blowing.

PS: ABC news reports the drone had four propellers, so definitely not an elevate.

I didn't really suspect it to be an ELEV-8 but I wouldn't be surprised that it was a hobbyist drone...

The only thing that is reasonably certain is that whoever flew the thing isn't a member of a RC Aero club.
The members of such clubs are generally well aware of the consequenses of flying too close to airport approaches.
