This is a year old now, so it might have been posted before. But if not there's hope for Propeller heads who want to run Linux on the Propeller chip.

So it takes hours to boot and has an effective clock speed is about 6.5 kilohertz.

Is it a contest to make the worst?

I have one virgin BS1 Project board left, looking for the right app...

Linux is based on Unix and has its roots in a multi-user environment. There is a heck of a lot of features that a Propeller doesn't need. Even the file system is more than the majority of Propeller applications require.

While I really love Linux, and C is helpful for the Propeller; I find that not only is Linux not necessary, Forth is a very fun and interesting OS or OS-like bit of software for the Propeller.

IMHO, Fitting Linux on a slow tiny system is more of a demonstration in not knowing what software is appropriate for a given hardware platform than it is a proof of Linux functionality.

There was a thread on this before, but I couldn't locate it with a quick search. I did some work on a Linux-like OS called spinix. It works OK, but the 32K hub RAM is a limiting factor. I'm looking forward to porting it to the P2 when that is available. spinix should be quite useable on the P2. The limiting factor will then be the 8 cogs, but that can be extended by doing multi-tasking on each cog.

As far as using Forth for an OS, that's a really bad idea. The user interface is horrible and the traditional Forth file system is even worse.

I think that the simulation boots linux faster that it takes to write/read all the threads about porting linux to the propeller. Such an emulator wuld be much faster on the propeller, though :)
