SUSE 12.2 SimpleIDE

I set up a system that is running SUSE 12.2, and installed SimpleIDE, successfully. The problem that I am having is creating/storing .side files to an external hard drive that is mounted. When I open the SimpleIDE Properties, and browse the Workplace Folder, the external drive does not appear anywhere. What am I missing here?

    Hi Ray.

I just started up my Suse 12 x86_64 VM.

I see my "HP Pocket Media" drive in the Open File and Open Project dialogs with the SimpleIDE version 0.8.5.

I downloaded what is available, Suse 12.x SimpleIDE-0-8-5 package, and I do not have available what you show. I attached a screen shot, as you can see I do not have any mounted drives appearing for selection.

If you select "Computer" on the left don't you get a list of all mounted volumes including your external hard drive?

No, all I get is the root volume. Even when I use the "Look In", all it shows me is what is available on the root volume. When I insert a USB thumb drive, that does not appear as a choice in SimpleIDE, either. Wonder if there is a setting that I missed when I installed?

Your dialog looks like a gtk file dialog (what desktop environment are you using? gnome? xfce? something else?), while jazzed's dialog is the typical KDE file dialog I also have on openSUSE 12.2 using KDE as desktop environment.
Beside that your removable devices should show up in /media when mounted. If you go to the root directory and navigate into /media what do you see?

Sorry Rsadeika, I forgot to mention that I did a small customization to my SimpleIDE.
In the bin folder (relative to the folder where the simpleide script lives) there were two Qt libraries which shadow the native Qt libraries in my system. I removed them since they lead to a situation where my desktop settings for the appearance were completely ignored. I just put them back now to be sure and then I see the file dialog you see, removing them again leads to what I am used to, to have the application in the style which my destop environment defines.
    Hope that helps.

Yea, that is another thing I failed to mention, gnome desktop. I think I might have to do a re-install and use the KDE desktop, I think, IIRC, KDE allows for more control of your computer, but not certain about it. But I am open to more suggestions to see if we can figure out what is up with gnome.

It should not be that you need to install KDE, just make sure you have the packages libqt4-x11 and libqt4 installed (if not already there install them with yast), then remove the libQtCore.so.4 libQtGui.so.4 which are shipped with simpleide, that should it be. If you are unsatisfied with the appearance run the qtconfig utility and adjust the settings for qt applications, this should work whatever desktop environment you use.

What is the path to your external drive when you access it from the shell? It might get mounted in /media or /mnt or something like that.

The only way I can see the external drive is when I open the 'Files' folder. In that folder it has a 'Devices' category where it lists the available stuff, and the path for the external drive is: /run/media/ray/New USB3, New USB3 is the name for my external USB3.0 hard drive.

Another problem that I am noticing is access to the windows computers that are on my network. I have noticed this problem with Ubuntu, Fedora, and now OPENSuse. Anybody else having the same problem? Yes, I have Samba client associated and running.

So you don't see the /run directory when you click on the "Computer" button in the file browser? If not, I guess it isn't really showing you all of the files in the root directory of the boot volume.

So, at this point I am going to do a fresh install using the KDE desktop, hopefully I will have better success with that.

You will enjoy KDE. It is beautiful, functional, and rock solid under SUSE. (KDE on Fedora seems a little buggy to me).

I installed KDE, and I got SimpleIDE up and running, but I still do not get a 'Places' when I do an 'Open File'. When I do a 'New Project' I have to hit on 'Computer', then open up root to get to the media folder which contains the external drive. Once there I can open up the drive and select a work folder. So, it is a little work but I can store the files on an external drive. So far it is working.

Now, setting up a network printer is not for a novice to try, Windows 8 is a delight in this regard. I tried the print option within SimpleIDE, and it works as expected. Still wondering why I am not seeing a 'Places' in my setup?

I think OPENSuse is having a problem with the way it handles the USB3.0 ports. I want to describe my system, since I am always looking for a small hardware foot print, I put together a mini-itx computer: Gigabyte GA-H61N-USB3 motherboard, Intel Core i3-3225 processor, 16GB of RAM, Samsung 256GB SSD, and a BlueRay optical drive. The MB has 2 USB3.0 and 8 USB2.0, no ps/2 ports for keyboard/mouse, you have to use two of the USB2.0 ports for the kewboard/mouse. I also have a SIIG USB3.0 HUB plugged into one of the USB3.0 ports with the USB3.0 external drive plugged into that. This is where the problem is appearing, sometimes the OS finds and mounts the external drive, and sometimes it does not. I tested this out by removing the SIIG HUB and just plugging the external drive directly into MB USB3.0 port, that does make a difference.

I loaded and tested the following: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, Fedora 18, Windows 8, and OPENSuse 12.2 gnome/KDE. My list goes from worst to best OS handling of the equipment described above. Although, now I have to move OPENSuse back a notch and move Windows 8 to the best for the system that I am using. As a general observation each one of the OS's had a problem with the USB3.0 port(s), but Windows 8 seemed to do the best job.

I am probably going to keep the OPENSuse 12.2 KDE on the computer and the SIIG HUB plugged into the second USB3.0 port and use the 4 USB2.0 ports. If I need some more HD expansion, the MB does have an eSATA port that I could use.

This is the first time that I have used a Gigabyte product, normally I use Asus, so I hope this is not a MB problem, although, as I mentioned, the Windows 8 seemed to have least amount of problems with my setup. I had noticed that OPENSuse 12.3 will be available in about a month, maybe with the new release all the problems will disappear. Hopefully the NEW SimpleIDE will be available by then.

Since I was in a system testing mood, I gave Kubuntu 12.10 a chance to work on my mini-itx system, I was impressed. Installing SimpleIDE was a simple effort, and the installation of a network printer was a painless act. The only problem that I have is that the Ubuntu version of KDE does not have yast, and that means there is no way that you can get into manipulating the firewall, not that I have found anyway. But not everything is perfect, this KDE does have problems with the USB3.0 port, specifically, when you bring the computer up from a sleep, it loses the external drive that is attached, so you have to turn the drive on/off to get it back up.

    Hi Ray,

Sounds like you're making some good progress. Ubuntu uses apt-get instead of yast. There is also a software utility in the system tools.
