Anyone see this article on using robotic penguins to film a documentary? I would like to take a look 'under the feathers' and see the mechanical structure. Says some of the penguins accepted one of the 'bots as a member of the colony.

Spy-camera robot penguins infiltrate bird colonies

Oops, missed Amanda's post about this same thing. Can't figure out how to delete this post, though.

Accepted robotic penguins into their colony? That's simple... bird brains. If you have ever hatched a duckling and found that it thinks you are its mother and it follows you everywhere you will understand. Especially when you have to man up and teach the duck to swim. (They actually sink at first, until they are old enough to produce enough body oil for their feathers... so don't start too soon.)

Discovery channel (I think) had a small roamong bot that followed Polar Bears around in the wild. It was quite a cool program. The bears would on occasion play with the bot but for the most part were not concerned about it following them around.

I believe its the same team - they claim they reused some of the artic bots for the antartic (snowball cam)... Some very nicely
engineered robot penguins IMO - a harsh environment for any tech. Would love to see more about the design of them.

If you tried that with parrots the parrots would disassemble the robot.

It's no surprise, as roosters respond to a wooden hen head. No mechanics needed.
Maybe there's a new use for Parallax Penguin Robots as clan leaders in the rise of Penguins.
