VEX Robotics

I have a school project where we have to build a atomonus robot using vex kit. It has to detected a infrared source and neutralize it. Any suggestions or thoughts on effective drive mechanisms and senor configurations would be appreciate.

cheers

I've used some VEX stuff in projects; their stuff is good, if a bit pricey for building an entire robot. I think we need a bit more info. Finding an IR source can be done with a couple of sensors, a basic differentially steered robot (you drive the left and right wheels at different speeds to steer, with the third wheel being a caster or slider). What do they mean by "neutralize" it? Also, how VEX does the project have to be? Are you starting with a common kit to which you can add third-party stuff as you wish, or are there other limitations?

We are using the basic VEX kit and are allowed to spend $40.00 for third party stuff. By Neutralize I mean touch the IR source but we are encouraged to get creative (place a ring around..that sort of thing). I was thinking of trying to build a dual differential drive robot but am unsure if that will work with such a kit. We have a few button sensors and an LED sensor for sensing the IR.

I am very new to Robot and really have know idea what works and doesn't.

    Cheers

You can go to their forum and look at what other people have built with their kits. The price can be very high if you use just their parts to build a robot. A good idea would be to check ebay, many people sell their old parts there.

My recent robot detecting and tracking IR beacons may interest you. Lots of info & links at http://www.botmag.com/index.php/picaxe-part-4
