Connecting a project board to an external bread board

Hello!
This is a repeating problem, and I found this solution for the headers on these project boards when the hosted breadboard is too small. I use the cables that were originally sold to connect sound cards to CD/DVD Rom drives:

The big problem is the specialty connector displayed in black. I'll probably need to wire a breakout board to support it, and using the matching break away header.

[And why bother with the useless funny/JST connector appendage anyway?]
Hello!
Because that's the style I chose. I have other regular cables, but those at the time were long enough.
