Spinneret Resurection

I while back I fried the Wiznet chip on one of my Spinnerets. Today I transplanted the W5100 from an Aduino Ethernet Shield I didn't figure I'd ever use, to the ailing Spinneret. I was able to successfully remove the bad chip from the spinneret and the good chip from the shield using a hot air tool. It took a couple of tries to get it soldered on strait and a few more tries to remove a few solder bridges. Dang that pitch is tight!

I was a little worried all I'd do is ruin a perfectly good Aduino Ethernet Shield but since I was unlikely to ever use it unless with one of my propeller ASC boards I went for it. Turns out it was a good exercise in fine pitch rework. :D

There really is no getting away from surface mount construction these days. The only way to build confidence and skills is to actually risk damaging some parts. But the rewards are well worth it.

I suppose that practising on junk boards is ideal.

The big advantages of surface mount might just be that it is easier to insert resistors and capacitors in forgotten places as they don't need holes and in many cases, one might just build a tiny one-sided board.

Actually, there's a "Kit" that costs about $30.00 for the full version of it that teaches you SMD soldering and you can desolder and try again. I will dig up the link and post it later. I bought one for my own use, just have not gotten around to messing with it yet.

    Doggiedoc,

Could you give us some info on the hot air tool that you used?

    Thanks,

@ctwardell - I used the wife's stamping up "heat gun". It's smaller than my "real" heat gun that I use out in the shop and the nozzle is about 1/2 inch or so... I'll look for a link.

EDIT: it looks a lot like this
