Accelerometer instability zones

I am trying to get a 3 axis accelerometer to work. It gives generally good values through the mid ranges but I've noticed that when any axis raw data approaches zero the data output becomes hugely unstable. The graph below shows a slow, constant speed roll of the device 90 degrees from flat to vertical.
Any ideas?
Is this typical for the MMA7455 3-Axis Accelerometer Module

Thanks

This is in a manufactured module with decoupling etc? Certainly looks like its damaged somehow.

It's just the parallax module, I've ordered a replacement so we'll see.
I agree on the damage but its odd that it behaves so badly only on one axis in that one region.
