Anyway, don't dismiss the seemingly absurd. In a survival circumstance it may be just what you need.
With Absurd being my middle name, here's something to chew on...
Do a search on "gas gangrene" along with methane, also with terms like Clostridial species, etc. World War 1 was bad for this type of gangrene because the soldiers were getting blown up in trenches dug in farm fields where manure was common. Their wounds would get infected by Clostridium bacteria, which don't like oxygen and are known for making methane. I'm not sure you could use a methane sensor to detect the presence of gangrene, but it's just a thought.
That heavens that Asia is a rice or noodles diet.
Of course, you can go ahead and blame the horses rather than the beans, but I know what's what or whatever's what.
