IR reciever

I have a 350-00014 infrared receiver. I also got some 350-00017 Infrared LEDs and was hoping to make some sort of a rangefinder. For some reason I have been unable to get the receiver to register any signal. Reading a data sheet about the receiver there are a lot mentioned about pulsing the LED. Does anyone know if this is required? Thanks for the help!

Are you modulating the LED at the correct frequency?

Remote control receivers have a filter built in to avoid noise from random IR in the world. Abut 38Khz 38.5Khz is the most common frequency used to set up transmission.

This is the carrier frequency, the bit rate is much slower.
