    Info here: http://learn.parallax.com/micromedic

However, The links under the explanation do not work. The links on the left column do but all items in the kits send you to the items in the Parallax store. So no discounts as of yet as was said in the OP video.

That second suggestion on the list...

    a medical tricorder?

Touch screen display running LCARS for menu driven expert system triage.
    with voice in/out option.

    Basic Tricorder Sensors? everything.
gps (where and when), accelerometer too. wifi to the net.

    Integrated Sensors
thermal - non contact type thermometer - with laser pointer option?
gas sensors - breathable atmosphere or hazards
remote wireless stethoscope, (prenatal heartbeat too?)

    then specialty add-on stuff.. medical/engineering/?

Wireless I/O for pulse oximeters, BP, EKG trace, etc...
    video and sound recording/playback.

    Comm links? voice/data

a few propellers and a slice of pi?

I would like to ask a somehow difficult moral question (even if this is a pure technical forum) at some point to almost any technology at a certain point moral chimes in

@parallax: Do you think parallax is the right company to support in a somehow quite direct way military technology?

I have read its a contest about "showcase how microcontrollers and sensors can be used to create opensource medical
and healthcare products" so far so good but now it goes on "to improve soldier care in the battlefield, an later as veteran"

Surely there have to be soldiers to stop people like Assad or the islamists right now in Mali. Don't you think there are enough organisations
supporting that? Please give a statement!: What do you think? Shouldn't there be more activities that are directly targeted to understanding
each other and a culture of conflict-solving without weapons?

Parallax It's your forum and I will accept if you delete this post (because of beeing offtopic and moral or even political)
But as a german I feel a special responsability to tell or write against war and for peaceful solutions right because of the history of my land.
In my opinion you would show great tolerance as I'm only using words to let this post be there.

You readers of this forum: maybe you look up youtube for "The Scary Guy" Very impressive man.
I agree 150% with "The Scary Guy" if he says "You can't eliminate hate with hate".

    best regards

I don't think improving better in-action medical care to soldiers or care to veterans is a problem. Any of that technology is also transferable to the public sector as better medical ace to victims of _________ and to aid first responders or aid/assistance devices to elderly and disabled. Medical trauma care is not political and does not choose sides. It's not developing weapons platforms or anything that would aid or encourage but humanitarian aid for after the conflict to be used by anyone. If the contest included anything Bout weapon systems then I'm sure it would not exist with Parallax as a sponsor.

Glad to hear this is online now. Was starting to think it was not going to happen...

Now, I have to think about what to do for a 1 minute video before 100 other people beat me to it...

Thank you mindrobots for your response. So well put.

    Stefan,

Our hope with this contest is to help encourage medical advancement for the benefit all. Some inventions that the general public benefit from have originated from the military. At Parallax we have many veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces and are proud of their service. We are happy to help advance medical care for all types of patients from detecting diseases earlier, trauma care, as well as preventative care.

    Thank you for your comment.

I wouldn't delete your post - you're welcome to have such an opinion and simply ask questions as you have done.

I've been involved with the http://www.tatrc.org/ Telemedicine and Advanced Research Center for over a year leading up to this project, and feel there couldn't be a better effort for these Federal dollars. Please read about their efforts in medical simulation and training - although they're part of the Department of Defense they're in the business of medical research, training and simulation.

Considering all efforts are open-sourced for civilian use and future product development, this contest has the opportunity to lower health care costs with new, lower cost products and training methods. It's not just for the Army, but since they are paying for it we believe it is appropriate to point out some of their benefits in the language "to improve soldier care in the battlefield, an later as veteran". And these words are ones I have written myself - they are not from any TATRC or US Army representative. They could have just as well said "to provide health care benefits to solders, veterans and civilians alike". In fact, this statement is a more accurate representation of the organization's goals so we might change it based on the subsequent meetings I've attended with their representatives.

In September I was fortunate to present this project in front of the TATRC organization and a panel of at least 25 medical physicians. The advisory board's direct feedback to me was to make the program educational and get schools of all types involved, to focus on health applications (both physical therapy and ongoing physical health monitoring/feedback), and to consider the health of veterans.

Like you, I have a sensitivity for wars and military action overseas. These personal considerations factor into how we run Parallax too, and I wouldn't take our company near any government-sponsored activity that I felt furthered some kind of negative military action, weapons or presence. The US Army has a very positive history of innovative healthcare methods and practices. Saving lives and improving health seems positive for all, whether you are reducing casualties or providing new technology.

I view the effort as a beneficial one for all people. Considering the results are open-sourced and placed on the internet, everybody is welcome to help themselves.

I think it speaks volumes to both Parallax and our community to have been chosen for this task. Beyond that, just where do people think most of the current art of trauma advanced life support practices and methods come from? Yep, learned the hard way on some battlefield somewhere. Can't stop the politicians and haters, so at least we can help lessen the damage and try to improve the quality of life for those injured.

    Stefan,
your position is understandable, and I can empathize with it. But here's something to consider: nothing turns a person against war faster than having gotten hurt in one. The toughest. most militaristic guys in the world often develop a totally different worldview after they've gotten severely injured in a fight. And those are the people you want to keep alive. Those are the "witnesses to history" and the living testimony as to what the real costs are for going to war. Later, they often serve as the conscience of a society, its living memory, and maybe the only force to prevent future generations from making the same mistakes.

I'm very glad to see the contest is divided into education and public categories.
Personally, I wouldn't think about entering otherwise...

Each little push bring it closer to reality. I wonder how many folks have this in the back of their mind?
a few propellers and a slice of pi?

That's what I thought of too. Connected by ethernet to a workstation on the field, and connected by internet to the pool of specialists in Germany.

Such that the specialist can start treatment when the wounded are brought in for triage.

I still have to read the 50 suggestions...
