Streetcar Donuts

No Davejames, it's not a new Hostess snack cake. Just Ken Block drivin' & driftin' through the eerily empty streets of San Fran. I thought Tracy Allen said it was all Priuses & Leafs up in the Bay area...?

Just a little something to get our heartrates up a bit as we surf the forums. I still say a robot drifting car would be a great challenge.

    ...pretty darn impressive.

But what I really want to know is, how much money did he pay for the "carbon offsets" to redeem all the cr@p he spewed into the pristeen SF air? [/sarc]

I'm disappointed. I expected to see a streeetcar doing donuts, twisting and snapping the cable, then glissading down the hill into San Fracisco Bay.

From what I recall, this just looks like a typical tourist in San Francisco trying to find the onramp to Hwy 101. I never could find it without circling around a few times.

Actually, the air in SF is quite pristeen due to the winds off the Pacific. All the CO2 and particulates tend to pile up in the south bay around San Jose.

    Dammit, there goes the neighborhood.

A very cunning way to get me to watch a commercial for DC Shoes.

Advertising for DC shoes?? Haha! I got the the better of that deal, I still don't know what DC shoes are, don't know where to buy them and don't know why I'd want them...but a Ford LIKE THAT would make a sweet little commuter car!!

Well, heck, I had expected to see erco handing out pastries on a trolley. Or at least some Twinkies.

I left San Francisco in 1994.

The daily doughnuts almost killed me, but my cholesterol has gone way down by eating Taiwanese food ;-)

BTW, that ain't no streetcar, that's a cablecar, yes... there is a bit difference. The streetcars are electric.

Interesting, but factor in normal San Francisco traffic, pedestrians and the occasional Critical Mass and there would be a whole lot less speeding and a whole lot more swearing. :innocent:

Surprising too, is the absence of some activist group protesting the whole event on behalf of an endangered insect, or tree, or whale or some such thing! :blank:

@Loopy FWIW, the vehicles in the "streetcar donut" scene aren't even cable cars, just a couple of truck or bus chassis' made up to look kinda like our beloved cable cars.

Another great video for car nuts. More hauling Smile thru several metropolitan cities (ah, Roma) in various Ferrari F1 cars. OK, it's really a Shell commercial, but you won't know that until it's too late.

Those aren't streetcars. Those are cable cars. Cable cars are much rarer, and as the name implies propelled by a cable moving beneath the ground. Streetcars are generally propelled by electric motors powered by a current running between the tracks and an overhead cable. There are many more of these, including a line in San Francisco along the wharves. Amusingly the SF streetcar line was populated with cars from other cities, including a couple from New Orleans, which caused much head scratching on my part when I first saw them.

Red Bull must have spent a mountain of money on this to get those streets cleared for the stunts. Even on Sunday morning SF is a very busy city and most of those locations are not just iconic, but also busy. I can't imagine they'd have been allowed more than a few hours for each tie-up to do the scene, including setup and removal of the protective barriers.
