Let's see an ELEV-8 with this setup...

    Dear Santa,

I promise to be really, really good (except for a rant every so often in the Forums) in 2013. Please put one of these under my tree next Christmas!

    Thanks!

    Rick

P.S. Really, really sorry about the fire in the fireplace last year!

Wonder if you could retrofit a cage around an existing quad-rotor? Kind of like training wheels for your quad.

Maybe you could make your own? Perhaps an icosohedron http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icosahedron out of balsa strips and hot melt glue. Should be possible to get the weight down to a few grams.

I think centering things and balance is very (very) critical with this one.If everything isn't dead center and balanced, I could see CIO (construction induced oscillations) tearing it apart or making operation questionable as the system tried to compensate for the off center movement.

But still way cool and worth a try!!

A temporary cage would be handy for any quadcopter during the initial testing phase, when you're adjusting gain settings. Also a boon in any indoor setting or around people. I really think this will catch on.

Great though balsa is (my half-built quadrotor uses some as a platform), I suspect it won't be as robust as carbon-fibre for the cage - kites use carbon fibre rather than balsa
    and crash all the time...

That's a nice find, Erco and quite feasible to repeat with the tools some of us have in our homes and offices.

Notice at the end "funded by an ONR grant" it would be interesting to know the grant amount provided to IIT to develop the robot. I'm always interested in what universities can do with certain amounts of money [because of course I draw comparisons with what Parallax does for certain amounts].

New beginners come flying quadrotors as quadrotors become easier to fly ( like the Dji Phantom) i fear that accidents occur and new laws may restrict our hobby ?

There are very few prop guards, and not nice looking : something with the Typhoon Arducopter or sfc .

Any simple ideas for people protection? it is becomming a real problem.

And plans to make our own robust guards with simple tools ?
