So, I was sitting here watching my 50" Toshiba Plasma TV when I hear a loud pop sound and then my picture was gone. It almost sounded like a cap blew or something. I still have power and sound but no picture and the menu will not come up either. So, if anyone has any experience with this type of issue please advise. I will pull it off the wall tomorrow and see if I can find what blew but thought I would see if anyone else ever had this issue and whether or not it is an easy fix.

Since there are probably a lot of different variations I would start searching on the exact model # of your TV. You may get lucky if it is a common problem. That helped me fix an old TV and we got a couple more years out of it.

It does sound like a blown capacitor. Look for swollen caps or discolored components and circuit board areas. Might be the power supply for the plasma screen.

Not sure how similar these are to lcd, but if it is not warranty eligible you have nothing to loose by opening it up. I would go on your original assesment of a cap blowing. Given what i have experienced with video cards and similar cap failures (google for electrolytic cap failures), you may get lucky if nothing else was damaged. Open, test all power supplies and driver ckts if any. Google is your friend for locating service info on these units close may be good enough as most of these types of devices are just variations on a theme.

    Good luck

@davejames, Thanks for this. The first one in the link is my exact TV. I may try to fix it myself. In the mean time, I have been wanting a 60" TV and now may be able to convince the wife it is worth it!!!!

...welcome! Lemme know if you fix it.

I've saved up enough airline miles that I could wrangle a 72" plasma...but, you know...I just don't find much to watch any more.

I know what you mean. I finally broke down and bought one a few months back after going without for almost 2 years. It might be on for all of 2 hours a week.

Funny this thread was here. Guess timing is everything. Went to goodwill today to see if they had any combo dvd/vcr (yeah, old stuff but the kiddo likes his and it died this weekend). Figured that goodwill would be about the only hope. They had one, only one and near perfect shape. 18 bucks Happy kiddo. Then saw an Akai 42 in plasma tv for a buck. Hey, if i csn reasonably fix it great, else I'll figure a way so that if it goes out for bulk collection everything goes with it st once........

    What Would ZSUS Do?

Z sustain board is part of the screen driver. Looks to be a power regulator/supply of sorts. May have to learn more if there is any other issues, but for now, looks like shorted power regulator.

Our electronic tech where I work says that Electrolytic caps in Plasma tvs Dry up all the time. I guess before he worked for us he use to do TV repair and said that's the most common component to go out, and he also recommended if that is the issue to use High temp caps....
