Grommets for servo mounting, not Wallace.

I've bought a fair number of RC servos for robot building and I've never bothered using the grommets and bushings that come in the bag with the horns and screws. I've been under the impression that RC modelers use them because their engines will shake their servos and cause the wiring to fail. But for electric robots the vibration isn't a problem.

Confirming this impression is the Boe-Bot which I've never seen use grommets. But as luck would have it, I recently read something on the SuperDroid site that they recommend using grommets.

So am I playing it fast and loose, or are grommets overkill when you don't have a two cycle glow engine?

i'd say that the grommets and related hardware are there for the vibration that you mention, and a legacy solution from fuel burning r/c engines. In some cases, they might absorb shock due to lash in loose linkages. The BOEbot is direct drive.

If you look at most mechanical constructions, you will notice an absense of grommet mounted devices.

+1 on ditching the grommets. IMO they are a bit like old-style servo savers. They offer some shock/vibration protection but probably at the cost of some positional accuracy. Not what I'm after for precision linkages and motion.
