Raspberry Pi Question

So, I think I am getting a Raspberry Pi for Christmas. Since I doubt anyone will be on the forums on Christmas day I thought I should ask this now. Where do I start? Is there a web site with instructions on how to connect to it, etc? Am I able to use my Windows system to connect to it and program it, etc and what software do I need?

You will need an SD card programmed with a normal starting image. From there, it's completely self-hosting.

    NWCCTV,
Since I doubt anyone will be on the forums on Christmas day...
    What you talking about?:)

Anyway a lot of European countries have their big feast on the 24th. the 25th is a nice quite day for getting on that little project that has been in the queue all year.

Good luck with the Pi, many of us here are dreaming up combined Propeller and Pi projects, you can even use the Pi to develop your Prop code on with SimpleIDE.

If you haven't ordered one already you may not be able to get it by Christmas since there is still a huge backorder on them. Of course there is always ebay if you want one now.

Once the Raspberry Pi is setup you can access it remotely from a Windows system but the only thing I've used a PC for is to download the images of the SD cards and then write those images out to a card.

For the Raspberry Pi itself you'll need to get:

    - SD card (as already mentioned) I'm running a 16GB class 10 card in mine.
    - 5V power adapter with Micro USB connector (rated for at least 1A)
    - USB Keyboard and USB Mouse (or USB to PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 Mouse adapter)

For the display you can use:

    - Composite cable and monitor (like the Propeller)
    - HDMI cable and HDMI display
    - HDMI to DVI cable (digital) and flat panel PC monitor with DVI input

You may also want a powered USB HUB.

I am trying to use the Raspberry Pi in one of my robots to see how well it works out. The robot already has a pair of Propeller boards to control the motors, power control, lighting, etc and also read the sensors. The Raspberry Pi will be connected to those. Over the Christmas break I want to see if I can get the Prop development environment working on it. The Raspberry Pi should help tie it all together.

    Robert

They are great for that. I had picked up and extra and gave one to my oldest son. He thinks it is pretty cool and was going through some of the examples in the MagPi magazine. For his I ended up getting one of these cases:

We stuck it with velcro on the back of a 17" HP 1755 display panel. That display has a built-in USB hub which can be used to power the Raspberry Pi. To connect to the monitor I picked up a cheap HDMI to DVI-D cable which is all on the back of the screen. The whole setup looks like just the flat panel with a USB keyboard and USB Mouse. Just one power cord from the monitor to power the whole thing.

If you are going to get a case and see one that you want you should get it soon since those all seem to sell out fast too.

No, I meant he is suppose to be getting one for me!!!! He works for a local aircraft manufacturer and is more in to aircrafts than the electronics like I am.
