Windows 8 Pro and SimpleIDE 0-8-5

I decided to install Win 8 Pro on a mini-itx box that is running on an Intel Atom 330 motherboard, this is a 1.6Ghz board. I just recently did an Ubuntu 12.10 install on this same box, just to see which install was less traumatic, the Windows 8 Pro wins, hands down. In fact, on this sluggish box (1.6Ghz), it installed faster than a Win 7 Home install or the Ubuntu 12.10; the start up of the box is much faster than Win 7 or Ubuntu 12.10 also. I think I just might make this my development box.

I also installed SimpleIDE 0-8-5 with no problems what so ever, and ran the default "Hello World" program, again, no problems at all. So, for me, this is a winning combination, everything just works. I did not install the Parallax Propeller Tool, because, at the moment, SimpleIDE has everything that I need. I know that things will be changing, but at this time everything is working as expected. I will be very very disappointed if I have to run two different IDEs in order to use Spin, and PropGCC, I can not imagine that the Parallax market research team came up with this idea, two different IDEs? What are they thinking? My recommendation would be to keep SimpleIDE 0-8-5, and take a wait and see attitude with the next releases.

So far I am very pleased with this setup, very positive feed back from me.

Ray

I think the idea is to have simple IDE compile SPIN soon.

    Thanks,

Simple IDE already compiles Spin. The plan, however, seems to be to release a version that is GCC only to satisfy that market segment.

Any way this is not a problem as you can always get the Simple IDE source and build it with support for GCC and Spin. At least that is what Jazzed tells us.

For sure I will be doing that for Debian/Ubuntu and making the resulting binaries available.

    Hi Ray,

I'm glad to hear things are working good for you on Windows 8. We strive to make SimpleIDE as productive as possible.

Ray knows this as do others. Just for the record SimpleIDE 0-8-x has supported SPIN in the default project mode since mid 2012. The current version supports SPIN syntax highlighting, compiling, loading, etc... and including SPIN or not is an option that depends on specific customers. We are working on some updates for one of the Parallax business units this month. Once those are done, we will move on to other areas.

Eventually we will make a SPIN only non-project version of SimpleIDE just for SPIN programmers. Ken Gracey and I have also discussed changes that will make SimpleIDE binaries smaller and easier to install/use. See this blog entry for more SimpleIDE plans.

SimpleIDE and Propeller-GCC are official Parallax products. Accordingly they will generate indirect revenue for Parallax, and customers will enjoy full support with Parallax distributions and project management.

For those who don't care for SimpleIDE as a C/C++ IDE and have enough experience, there are other options with existing tools like Eclipse, Netbeans, Geany, and VIM (my personal favorite).

I've been very impressed with Parallax's grasp of C/C++ so far with Propeller-GCC in the upcoming customer projects. They have a good handle on it all and their "special sauce" is just as tasty with C/C++ as it was with any other Parallax product.

As for my own plans, I plan to cut back on participation here and in other areas as development winds down. I still plan to maintain SimpleIDE according to Parallax needs. Other team members are also involved with development and maintenance, so if I get hit by a bus, the products can live without me.
