Si1143 Proximity Sensor

I've just ordered one of the new Si1143 Proximity Sensor units:

https://www.parallax.com/StoreSearchResults/tabid/768/txtSearch/28046/List/0/SortField/4/ProductID/874/Default.aspx

I wouldn't have known about it unless I'd seen a tweet from Parallax.

I'll be trying it out initially with a Propeller.

Is anyone else getting one? I think that the new Microchip device is superior, but it will be some time before it is available.

This one's a proximity sensor, the other one calls itself a gesture sensor. Probably very different in use. I'm guessing that three IR or sonar distance sensors might be better for sensing large gestures. What's the price on the Microchip unit?

The Si1143 is also intended for gesture recognition:

The gestures seem rather limited, though.

Pricing isn't available yet for the new MGC3130, but it looks as though it will be more expensive than the Si1143.

Thank you for the order, Leon. This sensor took a while to develop and it works as specified. I'll be interested to know what you think as one of the early adopters.

That looks like a really cool device. I am having trouble finding what it's range is though.

It depends on the objects it's detecting and the ambient lighting. I think it's a couple of cm for a finger tip.

I've just ordered some 5-way right-angled connectors, which will enable me to plug the assembly into a Proto board. I should get them on Tuesday, and I'll construct the interface so that I'll be able to test the unit as soon as it arrives.

The unit has just arrived. I'll interface it to one of my Propeller Proto boards and see if I can get it doing something.

I'm trying to use this sensor with an Arduino microcontroller but it can't get it to work...
    any ideas?
    thanks! from Chile
