A much-hyped discovery by Mars rover Curiosity flamed out like Evil Knievel over the Snake River as scientists Monday said they didn't actually find the chemicals needed to support life.
I suppose if you were a chemist, the -- to a layperson -- over-hyped discovery is pretty exciting. But when NASA throws out teasers like that, they need take the bulk of their audience into better consideration.

I can state that the instruments are used for laser spectroscopy. The basics included:
iris type shutters
monochromator
energy meter
TEC
laser and collimating lenses.
