Assistance required trying to understand cog timers

Hi everyone,
Working on a project where i need to use the counters in a couple of cogs but i must be stupid cos its not making sense to me would some one be able to provide or point me to some tutorials that explain using these timers for various functions such as pulse counting, pulse frequency and frequency generation.
