Absolutely FREE microSDcard holder!!!!!

I have been just getting into using microSDcards as Parallax and others are now building with them.

The problem arises when I want to build my own microSDcard holder and have to order parts from outside Taiwan - nobody sells SDcard holders or microSDcard holders for DIY soldering to a breadboard in the local stores. (I bought two Parallax microSDholders to get started)

But interestingly enough, I found one guy that just solders his wires directly to an SDcard. Sorry, but that just isn't my style. The SDcard is excluded from any other uses. And if I make a mistake, the SDcard is ruined.

But then I suddenly realized that I have gotten several adapters of microSDcards to SDcards with the microSDcards I've purchased. And these adapters are equivalent or nearly equivalent to holders.

I can solder all my leads and resistors, and by-pass capacitors onto one of the adapters and use that for breadboarding.

So I don't have to order anything. I even think I can work out a way to use surface mount resistors for pullups and wee bit of wire.

Loopy, Where have you been? (Oh, yeah, in Taiwan.)

Prof Braino has been telling people to do this for several years IIRC.

I personally have many more uSC cards than I have adapter so I haven't soldered directly to an adapter yet.

I do have a microSD to "miniSD" (or is it the other way around?) adapter I'm sure I'll never use in its intended way since I've never seen a device that uses miniSD cards. My miniSD card adapter might get turned into a breadboarding aid.

I hope you don't mind my razzing you a bit. I think it's a good idea and good to tell people about it again.

    SD FLOPPY IS BRILLIANT!

i've trying to figure out what to do with that drawer full of cables for years.
this is now on the "to do after 5.3 is releasd" list

The razzing is okay. After all, I may sound a bit naive and out of touch (just because I am).

Still, it is very handy and worth repeating.

And several people have put up some interesting adaptations. The photos are great. I personally was thinking of somehow attaching a 8x or 7x single in line 10K resistor pack to use as pullups.

This thread could get really interesting with all the Forumista creativity here.

The mind reels with "Redneck SD adapter" possibilities.

i have a bag of 10k 10 pin resistor. packs.

i solder these directly to the sd adapter when i solder on the headers. just bend up the pins covering ground and clock, etc.

it worked even the first time even though i melted the snot out of the adapter.

not pretty, but it works, just like me.

Not free, but I was able to solder a standard SD socket to a veroboard. Spin spacing is almost perfect.

OK, this was done with a regulation SD socket but it works rather well spanning prop pins P22..p25.
