basic stamp doesn't keep communications

Dear Forum members.
Just purchased this basic stamp kit for my kid. The USB cable to the 232 board doesn't keep communications with the computer. Has anyone else experienced this? i have to hold it a certain way for it to work. Then when it does communicate, the program (using the basic LED On/Off program) only runs once. With the loop command, I was under the impression that the program was supposed to blink indefinately. I tried the troubleshooting section to eliminate the possibility that my serial port may have compatibility issues, but the basic program doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated. Trying to teach my 10 year old boys that computers can do more than play games!
ok, tried a new cable and that fixed the communication problem. However, the program only loops once and the light goes off. The program running light goes off too?
