Serializing file names on sd card

Does anyone have or know of any good examples for serializing sd card file names? For instance you begin with file0001.txt and when you go to open another instance of file.txt it opens file0002.txt and so on. I know I have seen some discussion about this on here before but my searches haven't turned up anything useful.
