Winter Project

I need a winter project and have sorta/kinda landed on getting into robotics, need some advice on getting started.
Here is my background:
Retired, 30+ years as an operating systems assembly programmer.
Several years experience modifying/installing OBD1 components (Street Rod stuff)
A coupla years ago I purchased a Parallax Micro Controller and had some fun driving sequential turn signal for a vintage car (any of you old guys remember the '57 Ford? But that is all I really did with it.
Here is my current goal:
Imagine 1 or 2 or 3 'stations' set randomly around the living room floor. Each station would have an off/on switch located on it.
When any of those switches are turned on the robot would find it (them), go to them, physically turn that switch to the off position and, optionally, return to where it started.
1. Am I 'blowing smoke"?
2. Is this a realistic project for me?
3. If (1) above is 'no' and (2) above is 'yes', which robot kit should I pick up and what other components should I consider?

Thanks. Just subscribed to "ROBOT" and have done some other research including watching your video and reading your post of 2008 " 39 kHz IR Beacons for Robot Detection & Navigation". Now that I know 'mere mortals' can do this stuff my next task will be to order a BoeBot, learn those basics, and charge ahead.
