The Parallax Memory Stick Datalogger uses the VNC1L chip. There are several types of firmware available for the VNC1L. The firmware provided is the VDAP firmware.

When you go to the VNC2 product page, it focuses on modifying/developing your own firmware. The pre-compiled firmware page has firmware with source code aimed at very specific applications. The firmware that comes on the VNC1L on the Memory Stick Datalogger is supposed to handle all these applications. They provide versions of the VNC1L firmwares that run on VNC2.

Is it that that VNC1L wasn't that good at each of these functions? Is it that users wanted more freedom to edit the firmware? It's great that there's pre-written firmware with source code provided, but part of the benefit of Vinculum chip is it took care of talking to the USB without your having to get into the USB protocol.

Is the main advantage of VNC2 that you can write your own firmware?
