Warning on the Google Nexus 7.

It seems there some problems with the screens on a batch of these units. After less than two weeks of normal use the screen came loose near the power switch, when I gently pressed it back into place the glass shattered rendering the device useless. Can't even turn it off now. To Google's credit, I has a UPS return shipment label emailed to me less than 5 minutes after using their customer service contact form. Now I have to figure out if there's a way to backup my data from it and turn it off or wipe it without the touch screen.

Surprising. I have a Samsung Galaxys S phone that has been dropped, thrown and generaly abused for over a year now. The screen seems to be bullet proof. I noticed the first trace of a little scratch recently. Compare to my friends iPhone that cracked in half when he breathed on it to heavily.

The Nexus 7 is great and I haven't even tried rooting it yet. Just warning folks if they get one, to be gentle with it around the edges. The glass is VERY thin.

I took my Dell Streak tablet back to the shop a couple of days after I bought it because of a speck of dust in the camera. The Asst. Manager took it into the inner sanctum to get a replacement and then called me in - he'd dropped it on the floor and the "Gorilla" glass screen had shattered.

I don't have one of these or any other for that mater.

Most operating system have a "back door" or crude method of getting hold of the OS. Possibly through the USB port or WiFi.
If this is possible you could operate it without the screen. I don't know, just asking the question.

i would definately install the android sdk then point your win PATH var to c:\installed dir\platform-tools\ i belive. from there open a dos prompt and type adb shell to get a shell via usb or adb push/pull to move filez back and forth. the only problem with this is the device needs usb debugging checked in its settings since the nexus is branded twords hackers it may have been turned on by default

Yep, I gave up when I was unable to switch the pad to USB debug mode. At any rate, it's UPS's hands. Waiting to see if they will consider it warranty eligible. I sold an old laptop and iPod Touch to pay for it, so it better be.
