Lithium battery in a flexible cable:

This is going to make incorporating batteries in many devices a whole lot easier. Just wad it up and stuff it in, wherever.

I'm curious as to energy density...

I also have some doubts about the resilience of the aluminium.

And if you accidently crush it does it eventually catch fire/explode?

Yeah, like if you're using it in bracelet form and the bracelet burns up, do you lose your hand for lack of blood delivery?

Now you can give someone enough battery to hang themselves.

    With apologies to Mel Brookes:

I can see the next gen of portable audio now - electronics integrated into the earpiece, with a foot long (white) cable dangling out.

I'm surprised they say it's going to take until 2017 to mass produce these...

I don't think heat is a problem. Frequent flexing might rupture the case. The toxicity in LiFePO technology is the Flourine gas becoming an acid.

These would not be very child-proof.

Parallax's Lithium Battery Pack with charger/discharge is looking better than ever to me. I bought some 18650s and a charger locally, but without controlled discharge - the kids that are using my robot have managed to immediately destroy a couple of 18650s. They should not be shorted, even with internal protection.

So having a proper board for managing discharge as well as charge is critical to long-life of these batteries. I look 3.7 volts as I can finally use just one cell to power a microcontroller.

one of the uses a comment quickly pointed out would be to wrap this around the bezel of a laptop screen. any place with a large linear dimension.

granted I'm pretty sure this has a minimum bend radius a few multiples of the diameter, but at the same time, it is just one more tool to create an interesting product.

    I'd worry about a fire.
Seems like you hear about some new device's battery
    overheating every few days.

I had the battery one of those cheap Chinese keyfob cameras
overheat while I was wearing it tied to a string like a necklace.
My friend almost ran off the road when I screamed...lol
(too bad I don't have that on video it would be a hit on youtube)

Regarding older battery tech: I once put a 9V PP3 into my pocket after changing it out for a fresh battery in a radio mic. A few minutes later I felt a lot of heat on my thigh. Reached in and pulled out very hot battery and my key ring. Doh!
