This image is a portion of a larger image taken by Curiosity's 100-millimeter Mast Camera on Aug. 23, 2012.
Scientists enhanced the color in one version to show the Martian scene under the lighting conditions we have on Earth, which helps in analyzing the terrain.
For scale, an annotated version of the figure highlights a dark rock that is approximately the same size as Curiosity.
The pointy mound in the center of the image, looming above the rover-sized rock, is about 1,000 feet (300 meters) across and 300 feet (100 meters) high.

It looks like they picked the right location. Much more interesting than a flat plain. Can't wait to trundle up to the base of the hills and see what is there.

Don't forget that Opportunity's still producing too. Nice 360 panorama of its "doughnut tracks" at http://photojpl.com/greeley-haven-mars-panorama-virtual-tour/-/XMpLYEyNJJ/

will.i.am played on Mars? Really? I agree that something classical would have been more deserving.

Maybe it will connect with a younger generation better than something classical, and motivate more change.. Personally, I enjoy listening and playing it but I don't find classical music inspiring.

To be honest I found that a horrible waste of time and bandwidth. I suppose they are testing the uplink and downlink, but couldn't they use the bandwidth to send more useful data instead?

I'm surprised NASA is not yet reduced to selling Martian air time to politicians teaching us that civilization space exploration scientific research education doing anything awe-inspiring is not the role of government anymore.

Well, at least not for the US government anymore.
