This question comes up a lot, and the usual answer is "can't do it", but here's a guy who raided his wife's "fuzzy velvet ribbon" supply and posted his results. He used an SRF 10 sensor, but the general idea may apply to other sensors, including our beloved PING.

Doesn't the Ping))) reflector http://www.gadgetgangster.com/find-a-project/56?projectnum=361 improve the range and narrow the beam angle at the same time?
