Okay, I'm sick of all these UPExxs. Not that I have been to any one of them, but I'm sick of not being to any one of them but hearing all about them. So c'mon Aussie, c'mon, let's organize our own UPE "Down Under" (UPEDU) pronounced UPE DU, and translated into English (our second language) "Yeah, finally, sounds good, let's do it". What do you say?

I make a proposal that we organize a venue somewhere on the East Coast and central like the Gold Coast for instance or even Byron Bay etc. I know a lot of you guys out Perth and Adelaide way might feel isolated and handicapped because of your position (which you are :) ) but if we can make this work then we can consider a new location for next time.

My feeling is that somewhere around September to November is good and we would make it a weekend event. I'd love to see the stuff you guys are doing and and we could include at the Expo:
  • Presentations
  • Beer
  • Giveaways
  • Food
  • Bargain Table
  • Coffee
  • Contests
  • Beer
  • Prizes
  • Wine
  • Guest speakers
  • Food
  • Hands-on Workshops
  • Beer
Well, you get the idea anyway. So it would be good to get a feel for how many would be interested and whether family will be attending too (my wife will take plenty of photos etc) so we can organize the program to cater for all attendees. I know there aren't that many of us but it's also possible that this might be a good opportunity for other forum members overseas to make a good excuse to visit us down under plus we can get others we know interested and invite them along also (I believe my program suggestions would cover even the non-technical :) )

Even if there are only a dozen of us plus family etc we can make this work. Depending upon numbers we can also work out the best place for a venue but I welcome suggestions for a UPEDU from all.

Peter, you'll have the full support of Parallax for this gathering of Aussie beer makers. Count us in for whatever kind of support you think we should provide (short of sending Chip - he can't go anywhere right now..orders of little brother).

@ken, bet you'll have trouble getting volunteers to NOT go to UPEDU!

Awesome, Parallax and PhiPi (on a surfboard), YEAH! BTW, Byron Bay is probably the alternative lifestyle (and schoolies) capital of Australia and despite being a lot busier than it ever used to be is still a very laid back place. We went down there a few weeks ago to photograph the whales migrating north. Didn't get any shots of them then although we got a lot of shots of new south wales :) In September they will be heading back down south with their calves.

Peter, great idea, count me in for wherever it lands.

They ran a Mini Maker Faire here in January. Andy's video walkthrough here. To hang it off something like this would be ideal IMHO, as it spreads into 3d printing, quadcopters, artistic electronics and other stuff too. I just suspect it might be easier to get others involved beyond those on the Parallax forum.

But, Byron sounds fun too. Perhaps both :)

My vote would be for November or later as I'll be o/s in october any busy preparing in September.

We have some really good friends that are in Toowoomba, Queensland ... about a 3+ hour drive from Byron Bay.

Hmmm .... after Propeller II I have some vacation time coming up ... (Again -->), ... Hmmm

Beau, you know Qantas fly direct from Dallas-Fort Worth to Brisbane nowadays (QF8), and return via Sydney.

We'd even put on decent weather for you

    Nice Peter!
Just returned from Brisbane stopping in Balina with relos - Sydney to Brisbane is about 850km and 11hrs drive. The road is improving but roadworks slows the trip. Byron Bay is only about 30-40 mins drive from Balina.
Count me in but no so sure Liz will go (wife).

tubular: careful about promises of the weather - its been terrible up and down the coast this year so far.

Now it might just be me, and maybe I've had one or two *beers* this evening, but somehow I seem to be seeing the word *beer* double in post #1. Maybe triple. I'm not sure...

In any case, sounds a great idea. Plane tickets are cheap these days. My propeller touchscreen system is portable so I can bring it along (It went on my skiing holiday, and yes, I am a sad case).

We have family in Brisbane so the kids will be keen.

So where are we thinking? My only request - can it be somewhere reasonably near an airport. Taxi/train/bus distance rather than "hire car" distance.

I had no idea there were direct flights to Ballina from here, let alone for $69. So, when were you thinking, Peter?

Wow! I've always thought that it would be cool to visit "Down Under," but never did anything about it - until just now. Unfortunately, just under $2K (Pittsburgh to Brisbane and then car rental plus motel, etc.) is a bit rich for my blood at this time. On the other hand, if my business kicks in and I start making a bunch of money (actually, $2K is not a huge amount for a business trip, just more than I have now) I may come down and make a few new "mates."
