Radioactive boy - radio piece

I heard this over the radio today and thought this boy did a amazing thing. Dangerous no doubt but...

It's hysterical how the book The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments got banned from libraries after this kid was caught using it. I have a copy and use it once in a while to teach a chemistry lesson here and there. Apparently the book is a collector's item these days.

As I understand it, the Radioactive Boy Scout didn't look so pretty after a while. Was playing with radioactivity to blame or something else going bad for the guy?

I agree it's an interesting story. I just wonder if the Radioactive Boy Scout knows what PPE(Personal Protective Equipment) is now after playing with the fire.

I had that book when I was a kid. My grandfather built me an actual lab bench so I wouldn't do to much damage while "experimenting". It was down in the basement (concrete floor and walls). The bench was made of wood but the top and the shelves were made from slabs of some kind of fireproof stuff. I remember melting things like sulfur and lead and of course making home-made gunpowder. Back then (late 60s, early 70s) you could buy lots of common chemicals at the local drugstore.
