Large LED display

I am doing a project for my Museum where kids can perform a challenge to beat a world record (like stacking domino pices, or making pyramid with paper cups etc). The electronics is simple. The challenge is that I need to display time on a large and bright LED display. I can get those from Jameco or Digikey in individual 7-segment displays up to 4" in char height. I have done this in the past driving them with 595 without a problem, but it is messy and rather expensive.

Any idea where I can find such displays around 2" in char height, 4 digits in total and preferably with some sort of serial control?

The '595s are already installed. Not RS-232 serial, but SPI can be easily driven with a BS2.
