Trouble hooking up parallax 2 axis joy stick

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone could help me with a project I'm working on. I'm building a atari punk synth out of two 555 timers and I want to use joy sticks emplace of the normal potentiometers found on these things. I've tried hooking up the joy stick and it does work, but I can only get half of the joy stick to do anything; meaning that only up and right axis controls work. I have both of the positive and ground terminals connected to their expected places on the breadboard and have the L/R, U/D terminals hooked up to the correct pin on the 555 chip.
I've most often seen the joystick used with arduinos and other programmed circuits so I'm wondering if this can only be used with those kind of circuits. Also why does the joystick have more than two L/R, U/D? Most often i've only seen one side hooked up. I've tried wiring up the joystick in different ways, but I can only still get half of it to work.

The extra outputs for L/R and U/D are just for convenience in breadboarding. Like the ground pins, they are internally connected.
