Wireless Switch

I have a friend that lives on a property with a gate about 400 ft from his house. He needs to be able to press a button at the gate and have it ring a bell in the house.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a simple wireless switch like this?

Thanks for your help.

Jim

Unless you want this to be fancy, I'd just do a web search for a wireless doorbell. I've seen these in hardware stores. The range (400 ft) is a bit far, but there might be some that would work at that range.

This one quotes a 1000 foot range.

A pair of weather-resistant FRS radios can be had for about $40. These typically come with Call Alert, which is a coded signal activated by the PTT button on the transmitting side that causes an alert tone on the receiving side. One placed at the gate that can be turned on and activated, with the other in the house in its recharge cradle would do the job. As a bonus, your friend would be able to converse with whomever is at the gate.

Edit: 'Didn't know about wireless doorbells. I like Mike's solution, too.

If there isn't clear line-of-sight between gate and house that will reduce range considerably from the theoretical maximum.

FRS radios are usually sold in ranges of miles. This range is of course line of site, but at 400 feet unless you are trying to penetrate an rf shield, most any FRS radio with a call feature should work. For ease of setup of remote calling unit, get one with a pin plug charging socket and use a wall wort.
