I bought this item from ebay as a cheap alternative to the prop plug as they were sold out at the time. Can you guys advise me as to how to get this working?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-2-0-to-UART-TTL-6Pin-COM-Module-Converter-Adapter-CP2102-Chip-with-Cable-New-/271010411682?pt=UK_Computing_Parallel_Serial_PS_2&hash=item3f197ab4a2

but i can't seem to get it to work the computer (windows 7 or osx 10.6 with brians tool) sees the usb to uart and loads the silicon drivers but propeller tool just can't find the propeller chip on port com3. Its driving me nuts. My circuit is just the default circuit listed in the datasheet

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

It's impossible to tell with the information you've provided, but I suspect that the problem is with the RST signal. The Propeller Tool expects that the virtual serial port's DTR signal is used for RST and that RST goes low for a brief time when DTR is activated. The description of the adapter doesn't say what RST does or what serial signal line it uses. If you're lucky, you might just need a transistor inverter. You could try measuring the voltage on RST without a serial port open, then see what happens when you open a serial port.

I think it's likely you'll be able to use your alternative "Prop Plug".

Someone on the forum has provided instructions on what changes you'll need to make. It might require a transistor as Mike suggested.

I don't have time to find the link now. I'll look for it later if you still need it. I might have a link to the instructions in my index (see signature), but I'm not sure.

Thanks. As I'm a newbie at this can you tell me how I close the port and open it?

Try BST instead of Propeller Tool. It is some chance this plug will work with it. If not, there are some threads like this linked in post #5 about how to get it working.

Yeah ive tried BST that didn't work either. What is the difference between The command line compiler and The command line loader which one should i use to connect to the propeller chip?

You only need the BST IDE. And if it cannot see a propeller, you have to modify the plug as described.

do i definitely need to add a transistor, capacitor and resistor?
