Hey there,
Parallax wishes everybody a wonderful Independence Day today. Enjoy your hobbies, work, or family and just make sure it's a great day. A bit of safety advice is in order, too (one of my employees calls me the "dad" so apologies are in order for stating the obvious). As most Americans know the roads are a dangerous place on 4th of July. And there are more burn victims than any other day of the year. Exercise lots of caution and awareness in everything you do!
Carson and I just finished rebuilding an EasyGlider given to us by Phil and Browser a few weeks ago in Port Townsend, WA. Phil doesn't feel too skilled at R/C flying but Carson is crazy about learning how to do this, so now is his chance. We took a close look at Phil's work (really nice, thanks Phil!) and gave it an American paint job for the holiday. Now we're off to the nearby park to try our first flight. If it goes well and Carson now has enough experience to fly on his own we'll drop this from an ELEV-8 Hex by the weekend.
The Parallax manufacturing crew is in overdrive today, working two shifts. They're also working through the weekend on a very important production project. We recognize our fellow Parallax comrades for going way out of their way to do this when many of us are taking a true break. The manufacturing crew is a very strong team at Parallax, and they opted to work through the break for the company and our customers.
A VERY HEARTFELT THANKS AND APPRECIATION TO THE PARALLAX MANUFACTURING STAFF!
Watermelon, fireworks, hamburgers, sun, friends, independence and peace to everybody today.
Sincerely,
Ken Gracey

Phil, we might need to repurpose this glider. I think the ELEV-8 Hex drop is required to get it up to the elevation we need for a real flight. I'll team up with Nick and Kevin on Monday at lunch and see what we can do at sea level.
Back to the watermelon.

Oh yeah, now I remember getting the same workout. On flat ground, without an ELEV8 launch or an active thermal, a bungee is probably the only way to get sufficient altitude for sustained flight. I tried it a couple times with that plane, and it didn't rip the wings off, but I still managed to crash it consistently. (I never learned to think in reverse when the plane was coming toward me.) With the right breeze on a windward-facing slope, there will be enough of an updraft just to launch the glider by hand. I've seen it done with that plane ... by a skilled operator, not me. Slope soaring and avoiding rotors takes way more practice than I had the patience, ability, or desire to endure.
The ELEV8 might well add a new dimension to the world of RC gliders!

Happy 4th!
And.... 5th! UPS says Emic-II TTS should be here on the 5th so I'll have to save some celebratory supplies
