Has anybody anybody had real success using a compass module for navigation? Could you share some of your experience with me to get this working? I've been trying to get a robot to follow a course for about six months now with no success. I've Even resorted to using two modules but no success but with no success. The headings I get from the compass/compasses do not make sense at times and go completely insane.

Do you have the compasses mounted away from the motor drive cables? If not they will be affected by the magnetic field around the cables. Post some photos of your set up.

Also do the modules work on their own - i.e. not as part of your robot?

    Cheers

I'm using the hmc5883 which is the successor to the HMC6352. I had problems with the HMC6352 giving repeatable results, ie, north can vary by 30 degress according to time of day, and location in my house.

The 5883 is a huge improvment. I did use the code from the obex, but modified to use my own trig functions using the raw X,Y data. I calibrated the X,Y data by offsetting against my own N,S,E,W measurements. Othersie I found N and E were not 90deg apart, same for the other directions. It's working great for me now.
