The Embedded Wireless Module Market Heats Up Again ...

SparkFun is now carrying yet another xBee module competitor from Synapse. It's programmable and can interface to analog, I2C, SPI, and other devices via a Python subset based interpreter. SparkFun's webpage has links to the manual. They implement a mesh-like structure without a controller. All modules are addressable from anywhere in the network. Most of the functionality, other than the serial connection, is done by remote procedure call (RPC). The network can optionally be encrypted.

It looks like the RF100 versions (Digikey) have a range up to three miles. Impressive!

Just a heads-up: the RF100 versions are not socket-compatible with XBees.

According to the datasheets, it only requires about 130 mA of current while transmitting, compared with over 200 mA for an XBee Pro. That oughta be a significant advantage for a lot of uses.
