Looking for a small calculator type display. LCD, 7 segment etc.

I am looking for a small LCD, 7 segment or similar display that has to show at least 4 numbers. All it will display is a number that ranges from 0 - 9999. IIt cant be back lit as in it has to look like a calculator display - any light given off by the display will cause interference with the instrument .

The size has to be under 40mm and I have to be able to buy from1 to 10K units.

Any ideas, links and comments is greatly appreciated.

Yes but no. They are too long remember it needs to be ~40mm long.

This one is a raw reflective LCD module that has a 43mm-wide viewing area but (I believe) no driver electronics. If that's the case, you will have to supply a driver that provides positive and negative voltage swings.

Oh, nevermind. That's the same one that RobotWorkshop recommended. But which dimension has to be 40mm? The viewing area or the module size. You may be restricting yourself too much if it's the latter.

Sorry the width has to be under ~40 mm so the viewing area is presumably smaller.

I have found some that are in China yet I would have to order 500. If I can get a sample and it works for the project then heck ill order a 1000!

I'm sure if you contact the chinese supplier telling them you may put in an order for so many that they will send a sample to you.
    good luck with your project

Having dealt with Chinese companies in similar situations, I'm sure they will be happy to sell you a sample and FedEx it to you on your own FedEx account. They will not suffer one penny of lost profit to accommodate future business with an unknown customer.

Duane, 1.95" is more than 40mm.

Bits, take a look at this one:

It's not 7-segment, but it will accommodate your needs with the right programming. Although it comes with a backlight, you don't need to use it, since the display is transflective.

The Lattice Pico Board I have here, has a small 4 digit LCD, 7 segment, 4 digits, Package is ~ 21mm wide x 11mm, so that is under 40mm.

It has 12 pins down one side, looks like 1.5mm pitch. No backlight (reflective?)

Given it is used on a low cost eval Board, it has to be both cheap, and available.

Edit: I'd guess it is one of the LCD-S401xx Lumex series from Mouser, 74c/1000+

Nice looking displays, great finds. Thanks.

Phil that display, is there a object out there that could "hello world" for me? I am about to order it but dont have a lot of time for the learning curve.

Bits, not that know of. I've got one here and was going to write some Prop code for it, but I screwed up the interface PCB design and never got around to having another version of it fabbed.

Actually the one jmg mentioned looks like exactly what you want. Unfortunately Mouser doesn't stock the plain 4 digit model, only one with additional annunciators for pressure units (maybe you could just ignore those). You could probably contact Lumex for a source or maybe order some samples. Less than $1.50 for singles and well under a dollar in quantities of 1000.

Here is the search link. Look at the ones with 0.17" character height.

I have contacted Lumex but have not got a response yet.

Mouser quoted me a price but I have to buy 500 and wait 6 weeks. Not a big deal expect I would have liked a sample first before ordering 500 units and waiting 6 weeks, shoot my boss cant wait 2 hours for lead times.

    Bits,

Be sure you understand the interface requirements for the Lumex units. It's not simply digital. They're raw LCDs that require an AC drive voltage.

Phil, I am going with the one you selected. I think it should be simple to come up with code, although I am still weeding through data sheet after data sheet. Listing to Albert King makes it easier.
