A nearby community had an impromptu viewing at which people had set up some telescopes, pin holes, etc. We had a big cloud block the sun for a long while, but when it passed, everyone was ooohing and ahhing the sight of the little round dot.
"Just think of it," people kept saying to each other, "The next time Venus crosses the Sun like this won't be for another 105 years."
"Yes, but just think about this," I added finally, "The next time that big cloud crosses the Sun like this will be.... never."
As part of my reward for dispensing such a deep philosophical thought, I was handed a plate of food and a beer for free. People were inexplicably happy with the event. These Venus transits, I thought to myself, should happen more often.
